伊利诺伊大学昆虫学家进一步证实了伊利诺伊州的另外3个县出现了对Bt 玉米产生抗性的西方玉米根虫,加上以前证实的两个县,一共有5个县得到证实。
2012年8月,伊利诺伊大学的Mike Gary与爱荷华州立大学的实验室合作证实了在伊利诺伊州西北部亨利和怀特塞德县出现了对Bt玉米有抗性的西方玉米根虫。现在,他利用单株测定法,发现去年夏天在伊利诺伊州麦克唐纳、美世和桑加蒙县采集的玉米根虫的幼虫,对Cry3Bb1蛋白产生抗性。
